“ELROY THE ELK WINS MOST PATRIOTIC AWARD IN PARADE”
By: Derrick Sims
The Roxboro Elks Lodge #2005 partnered with the Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce and the Person County Tourism Development Authority for the 13th Annual Roxboro 4th of July parade. The Roxboro Lodge purchased over a thousand American flags to distribute to all of the patrons that were in attendance on Wednesday. Over a dozen Roxboro Elks were on hand to volunteer their time at the parade which saw record numbers in attendance.
The North Carolina Elks Drug Awareness Trailer and Elroy the Elk were also on hand at the parade. Elroy was a big hit and took many photo opportunities with the kids after the parade while local Elk volunteers handed out drug awareness materials to the young crowd. After the parade, Elroy was presented with the most patriotic award for the 4th of July parade to thunderous applause.
The Roxboro Elks Lodge #2005 would like to recognize the following non-profit groups from Person County that assisted with the parade. Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce, Person County Tourism Development Authority, Roxboro Development Group, Partnership for Children, Person County Senior Center, Roxboro Area Merchants Association , United Way, Person County Library, Person County Parks & Recreation, Piedmont Community College and Person County Museum of History.

June 14,2018, was a special night at the Charles George V.A. Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina. One of their patients, Wayne Carringer, was about to turn ninety-eight (98) years old in a few days; and members and volunteers from both the Hendersonville (#1616) and Asheville (#608) Elks Lodges were on-hand to help him celebrate. A birthday cake was presented to him and all in attendance sang ‘Happy Birthday’. Sadly, Wayne passed away a short time later on July 1st, surrounded by loved ones. He was a true American hero.
Wayne was one of our oldest surviving American soldiers who endured the Bataan Death March during World War II. He was a POW for nearly 3 and a half years. Starvation, beatings, torture, solitary confinement, humiliation, illness without medical treatment, and slave labor in a Japanese coal mine resulted in Wayne receiving the name ‘Ghost Soldier’. The Federal Government had declared that Wayne was missing in action and presumed dead.

“ROXBORO ELKS HOLDS 52ST ANNUAL SENIOR LADIES NIGHT”
By: Derrick Sims
On Friday, May 11th, the Roxboro Elks held its 52st Annual Senior Ladies Night. About 60 widows in the community enjoyed a relaxed evening of fellowship with one another while being treated to dinner and prizes by members of the Roxboro Elks lodge. This special event has been held each year on the Friday before Mother’s Day since 1966. Many members consider this project their favorite. The dinner was held at the lodge where members where in the parking lot to greet attendees as they arrived and assisted them with parking.
Once inside, each woman received an envelope with $10.00 cash in it. Later in the evening, tickets were drawn for more cash prizes and the potted geraniums decorating the table. Member and other volunteers served attendees dinner and desert. The evening wound down with more mingling as everyone collected their prizes and some their carefully wrapped leftovers. The Roxboro Elks look forward to continuing with the tradition of this project for many more years to come.

This year’s Camp Carefree Gala fundraiser will be on March 3 at the Greensboro Lodge. Tickets are $20 and include BBQ dinner, a DJ, and plenty of fun!
We are very excited to have a western theme this year. I have attached a flyer that can be posted in your Lodge. We hope to see many NC Lodges attend this year.
To help raise money for Camp Carefree, we have come up with a great fundraiser. For a $25 donation, we will make a “Wanted” poster of anyone in your Lodge. The posters will be hung up at the event for everyone to enjoy, and you can take them with you at the end of the evening. Not able to attend? We will also email you a copy that you can print and hang in your Lodge. I have attached a couple of samples. Just email me a picture, the outlaw’s nickname, and “wanted for” charges. Be creative and have fun!!! Donation checks can be mailed to the High Point Lodge or give us a call and we can take credit card information over the phone. We hope to have participation from all of the Lodges.
Pictures need to be sent to the High Point Lodge hpelks1155@triad.rr.com by February 28 so we have time to get them printed. Please feel free to call me with any questions.
Thank you for helping us support Camp Carefree and I look forward to seeing you at the Gala!
