“ROXBORO ELKS REACH TO THOUSANDS IN DRUG AWARENESS CAMPAIGN DURING PERSONALITY FESTIVAL”

By: Derrick Sims

The Roxboro Elks Lodge #2005 partnered with the Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce for the 41th Annual Personality Festival in Person County on August 24-25th. The Personality Festival is a two-day festival that attracts 10,000-plus visitors to Roxboro every August. The Roxboro Lodge continued its Drug Awareness campaign by distributing awareness materials to the local residents and visitors that were in attendance. As always, there were many Roxboro Elks on hand that volunteered their time in an effort to make an impact in the community.

In addition to the campaign, Elroy the Elk made several appearances at the festival. Everyone had the opportunity to meet and take photos with Elroy at the Drug Awareness Trailer. Even with the record high temperatures, the overall campaign was a complete success.

The Roxboro Elks Lodge #2005 would like to thank the Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce for allotting space to accommodate the lodge’s drug awareness campaign and look forward to continuing future partnerships in an effort to make our community a better place.

NC VETERAN WAYNE CARRINGER – WWII POW

June 14,2018, was a special night at the Charles George V.A. Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina.  One of their patients, Wayne Carringer, was about to turn ninety-eight (98) years old in a few days; and members and volunteers from both the Hendersonville (#1616) and Asheville (#608) Elks Lodges were on-hand to help him celebrate.  A birthday cake was presented to him and all in attendance sang ‘Happy Birthday’.  Sadly, Wayne passed away a short time later on July 1st, surrounded by loved ones.   He was a true American hero.

Wayne was one of our oldest surviving American soldiers who endured the Bataan Death March during World War II.  He was a POW for nearly 3 and a half years.  Starvation, beatings, torture, solitary confinement, humiliation, illness without medical treatment, and slave labor in a Japanese coal mine resulted in Wayne receiving the name ‘Ghost Soldier’.  The Federal Government had declared that Wayne was missing in action and presumed dead.
